No Baptism Mass for April
There is NO Baptism Mass on April 24 at Sacred Heart as I have First Communion at St. Ann.
First Communions take place next week at St. Ann and in two weeks at Sacred Heart. Please pray for our children as they approach the table of the Lord for the first time.
Reflection on Scripture
Today’s gospel selection depicts Jesus as a shepherd. This is an image of Jesus that is attractive to almost everyone; that is until we recognize we are the sheep. The analogy is also more accurate than we might like to think. Sheep do really stupid things that defy what we would refer to as common sense. Well, so do humans. Sheep are so afraid of anything that resembles a wolf that they have been known to run from dogs until they literally die of circulatory failure. I suspect more humans die from running away in fear from a snake than do from snake bites. Sheep often don’t take time to discern who they are following. Well, humans do that too. Therefore, as humans we need leadership as acutely as sheep do.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He loves us so he never leads us astray. It is therefore prudent to follow him even when we think we know a better way. Jesus says love is more powerful than hate. We may choose differently. Jesus says forgiveness brings peace of heart to the one who forgives. We may say “get even” with your enemy and it will feel good. Only Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Following him just makes sense; even to a recalcitrant sheep like me.
